I thought I was lucky

Last Thursday, I was very early for my lesson @ the Kitayamata branch of Smiley school, in Yokohama. The building wasn't even open yet, because I had gotten up at the crack of butt in order to get a ride to the station with Cassandra at sardine hour. So I wandered around near the school, along a pleasant tree-lined path that led to a park. A pond was set in the center, and as there were a few benches nearby, I wandered over. To my surprise, I saw something swimming near the surface... it turned out to be a turtle! Upon closer inspection, I realized that there was a fair population of turtles living in the pond. I saw at least half a dozen of various sizes, some swimming, some sunning themselves on the edge. They let me get pretty close to take this picture, and didn't jump in the pond, though they eyed me as I approached.
There were also koi in the pond, and ducks. I sat on a bench and whiled away a few minutes, and after a bit a small boy and his father walked by. The boy saw the turtles, and excitedly tried to sneak up on them. They let him get very close. Just as he attempted to grasp one in both hands, though, it plopped into the pond. They boy tried the other one. Plop! I laughed.

Mom said that turtles are a sign of luck in Japan. I wanted to take them as a good sign. A few hours later, though, I bombed my trial lesson and the moms wheeled their little screamers away, enryo-suruing. Maybe it wears off after a little while.

Ishizuka Hidehiko

Yesterday we saw Ishizuka Hidehiko on the train. A very famous TV personality in Japan, he specializes in shows about food - but is so ubiquitous, you can hardly turn on the television without seeing him on one show or another. Ian spotted him first. He boarded the Oimachi line at Kaminoge, and though in the next car, Ian said - "hey, I think the big guy with bleached hair from TV just got on the train one car over". Mom and I both said - "where? I doubt it. nah...". We noticed, however, that quite a few heads were turned in that direction. At the next stop, FutakoTamagawa, we changed to the Denentoshi line, and cheekily got on the same car as the suspected celebrity. Sure enough, it was him. He was wearing high-waisted camouflage pants, rolled down, a black tank top, and reflective sunglasses. He was also carrying a red leather purse. He faced the window, not looking at anyone, but the car was abuzz with whispers. He got off a few stations later, at Takatsu. He was one of the only people to get off the train. The young couple sitting in front of us watched him get off and wondered aloud... "where is he going?"

Kevin on our land in Klamath County

Kevin on our land in Klamath County

This is a picture of Kevin on the land we bought on
ebay two years ago. It is about 3 and 1/3 acres on an
irregular lot. There was a bunch of trash and an old
bus/rv on the property that was supposed to be
removed.. I haven't been back since but hope to visit
again soon.

Babar in Shinjuku

Babar in Shinjuku
Originally uploaded by selenahoy.
Ian and I went to see a Babar exhibit in Shinjuku, with free tickets courtesy of Cassandra and her student Miho. Thanks guys! It was really cool, with lots of original art. Babar was born in 1931 and Jean du Brunhoff created three Babar books in his lifetime. His son, Laurent, took over the legacy and has written dozens more books since.

We also went to Asako and Jung's house for dinner last night, and Jung suggested an impromtu trip to the karaoke palace. It was fun, if random and unexpected.

Moving lots of stuff into the new apartment. Bit by bit. Now we just need a refrigerator, a stove, and internet, and we'll be good (enough) to go.

Mom, Steve and I a few years ago

This is a picture of Mom, Steve and I just a few short
years ago. There were five more to follow. How she
ever managed is beyond me. Actually, Debbie must
already be somewhere around since she is just one year
younger than Steve. She was very petite. Love you mom.
